Hi, I’m Heidi!
Sofie & me in the North Cascades
I am a Registered Sports Dietitian & Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, with my Masters in Sports Nutrition from Liverpool John Moores University in England. I have been practicing as a dietitian since 2014 & I launched my virtual private practice, Heidi Strickler Nutrition LLC, in 2020. I specialize in endurance & mountain athletes, female hormones & the menstrual cycle, plant-based athletes, and athletes with eating disorders, disordered eating and/or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS). I combine performance nutrition science, my personal experience as an athlete, and my eating disorder story in my work with clients & in the presentations I give. I am passionate about optimizing the short & long term health & performance of the athletes that I work with, and about changing the language, beliefs & culture of sport across all ages, sports, genders & levels. I believe in the power of empowerment and the value of widespread education & honest conversation.
I have always been an avid athlete. I competed collegiately in both soccer and track & cross country, and have raced triathlon, cyclocross, and trail & ultra-running post-collegiately. While trail & ultra-running are my true passion, I am an all-around outdoor endurance junkie, and the mountains are my happiest place. I love exploring the PNW & the world via running, climbing, skiing, cycling & backpacking, oftentimes with my dog Sofie Aspen. I believe in & practice an “all foods fit” mentality & some of my favorite foods are coffee, peanut butter, chocolate, Greek yogurt, pizza, tacos, carrots, bananas, breakfast sandwiches, roasted veggies & ice cream.
Fun fact: I compete for the United States in snowshoe racing!
I believe in …
-
Food is the ultimate fuel for our sports, activities, exercise & adventures. For people who lead an active lifestyle, there has to be an appreciation for the physical demand on your body and the necessity to balance & match that demand with adequate fuel, or nutrition. Food is also fuel for (1) our brain, and thus school, work, emotional capacity, mental health, and (2) our organs, which is why food is important even when we are not actively exercising or moving on a regular basis. Like water and oxygen, we need food to live. And there is nothing we need to do to earn it.
-
It is my goal to make food as enjoyable for you as possible. That does not mean that you need to enjoy cooking, grocery shopping, or meal prepping. It does mean finding a way of eating that works with your life and lifestyle. We all experience anxiety from a multitude of sources … food should not be one of them. Food, at its biological core, is meant to be pleasurable, because it is the core signal of survival for our bodies.
-
I spent over 10 years of my life being afraid of food, of what it would do to my athletic performance, my heath, my body. I collected food rules and food fears like they were going out of style (as if), and the more I collected, the more “in control” I felt, but the less in control I ultimately was. I believed my ”self control” would bring me happiness, an athletic edge, and self confidence, but it did nothing but degrade my physical and mental health one sneaky day at a time. We live in a society that glorifies weight loss, dieting, and excessive exercise; fear-mongering of food drowns out true nutrition science and healthy eating practices. I pride myself on helping my clients find food freedom and move away from being afraid of food, even if they didn’t realize it beforehand. Clients and athletes find they are happier, healthier and better athletes when food freedom is part of their lives.

Testimonials

After hearing Heidi speak in Naperville, I changed a lot of what I do as a coach around nutrition and periods. My team has never been so successful. When I ask the girls what is different, they attribute it to eating more.

After only a few sessions with Heidi, our daughter began to show more food freedom and less food anxiety than we have seen in years, even after working with other dietitians. Thank you for all you do!

I was struggling for years and thought there was no way to have a positive relationship with food again until I started meeting with Heidi. Her kindness and caring attitude combined with her education made it easy to trust her process. I am healthy, fueled, and love competing again all thanks to Heidi!
